It’s a New Day for Kid’s Lunches

With new federal mandates on nutrition standards for school meals, many schools are struggling to comply. Ensuring that meals are healthy, well‐balanced, and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school is a time consuming, difficult task. School lunches are now required for students to receive fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy, while limiting saturated fat and portion sizes. Starting in 2013, school lunches were required to meet additional standards including:

  • Age‐appropriate calorie limits
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
  • Fat‐free or 1% milk
  • More whole grains
  • Less sodium

At A+ Lunches, we make serving up school lunches easy! Our complete meal planning and catering services meet the requirements of the National School Lunch Program and Child Care Food Program. Because of the sunbelts’ year round growing season and our abundance of fresh produce, we have a prime opportunity to serve a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. By improving the nutritional value of what we serve our kids, we will ultimately raise a healthier generation of students. A+ Lunches is dedicated to helping Oregon schools become the healthiest in the nation.

We know good nutrition is imperative to a child’s growth, development and learning. It is our commitment that every child we serve has access to a nutritious meal full of fresh fruits and vegetables. We aim to educate students on making healthy choices and understand importance of a well balanced diet.

Implementing Farm to School

A+ Lunches encourages nutrition and agriculture education through taste tests, school gardens, composting programs, and farm tours—initiatives that also support local community farmers markets and regional farmers. These experiences help children understand where their food comes from and how their food choices affect their bodies, environment, and community. Additionally, A+ Lunches serves as an information clearing house. Schools gain accessibility to seasonal fresh produce at the best possible price and farmers learn about fruit and vegetable needs of schools.
